ABRA Frequently Asked Questions
The American Buckskin Registry Association (ABRA) is a nonprofit equine color registry based in Tulsa, Oklahoma, dedicated to registering and promoting buckskin, dun, red dun, grulla, dunalino, perlino, and dun factor horses, ponies, draft horses, miniature horses, and mules worldwide. Whether you are new to ABRA or a longtime member, here are answers to the most common questions about our registry, membership, programs, and events.
What is ABRA?
ABRA — the American Buckskin Registry Association — is a color breed registry that collects, records, and preserves the pedigree of buckskin and dun factor equines of all breeds. ABRA serves as an information center for members and the public on matters related to registration, showing, breeding, and equine ownership. ABRA is based in Tulsa, Oklahoma and serves members across the United States and worldwide.
What colors does ABRA register?
ABRA registers equines displaying the following colors: Buckskin, Dun, Red Dun, Grulla, Dunalino, and Perlino with Dun Factor. Champagne and Pearl horses may also qualify if they visually meet the coat color requirements. Gray, Roan, Paint, Pinto, and Appaloosa characteristics make an equine ineligible for regular registration.
What types of equines can ABRA register?
ABRA registers light horses, draft horses, ponies, miniature horses, and mules. Separate registry divisions exist for each type. Miniature equines measuring 38 inches or less go into the Miniature Equine Division. Equines under 56 inches at the withers are placed in the Pony Division. Draft horses are typically 16 to 18 hands.
What is the Buckskin Bred Program?
The ABRA Buckskin Bred Program was expanded in 2025 to welcome more horses with Buckskin lineage, even if their coat patterns don't meet Regular Registry guidelines. Horses with a Buckskin, Dun, Red Dun, Grulla, or Perlino Dun sire or dam within four generations may qualify. A Hardship Clause also allows Paints, Pintos, and Appaloosas to qualify if they carry an ABRA base coat color. In 2026, ABRA is offering half-price hardship registration for eligible horses.
How do I register my horse with ABRA?
To register your horse, pony, draft horse, miniature horse, or mule, your equine must visually meet ABRA's color requirements. You can register online through the ABRA website or download a registration form from the Forms page. Registration fees vary by equine type. Visit our Registration page for full details and to begin your application.
What membership types does ABRA offer?
ABRA offers nine membership types to fit every member's needs: Individual, Amateur, Amateur Upgrade, Non-Pro, Youth (under age 19), Joint, Business, Lifetime, and Partnership. Memberships are open to equine owners and enthusiasts worldwide. Visit the Membership page to choose the right option and join online.
Does ABRA accept international members?
Yes! ABRA membership and horse registration is open to equine owners worldwide. While most members are based in the United States and Canada, anyone who owns a qualifying equine is welcome to join.
What is the ABRA World Championship Show?
The ABRA World Championship Show is the premier buckskin horse show experience of the year. The 2026 World Show runs July 29 through August 1 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. It features competition across Halter, Western, English, and Ranch disciplines, with speed events, WRHA dual-approved classes, and NSBA dual-approved classes. There is added money competition, awards including 2025 year-end championships, trophy buckles, saddles, and prize money. The World Show is open to ABRA members and competitors from across the United States and beyond.
How do I enter the ABRA World Championship Show?
Entry information, class schedules, fees, and deadlines are posted on the World Show page of the ABRA website. Competitors must hold a current ABRA membership and have their horse registered with ABRA to compete in most classes. Some classes such as the Buckskin Bred and Youth events are open to additional participants.
What are ABRA Charter Clubs?
ABRA Charter Clubs are independent regional horse clubs affiliated with ABRA that promote registered buckskin horses, ponies, miniature horses, and mules in their local communities. Charter clubs host shows, futurities, stallion services, and special events, giving members more opportunities to show and grow within the ABRA community. Current charter clubs are located in Idaho, Kansas, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Oregon, and more.
How do I find an ABRA Charter Club near me?
Visit the Charter Clubs page on the ABRA website for a full directory of active charter clubs listed by state, including contact information and websites.
How do I start an ABRA Charter Club?
To start a charter club you need a small team, four officers (President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer), club bylaws, and a completed ABRA Charter Club Application. Your club must also host at least one qualifying event per year such as a schooling show, an ABRA-approved show, or an educational clinic. Download the Bylaws Template and Charter Club Application from the ABRA website to get started.
What youth programs does ABRA offer?
ABRA is committed to supporting young equestrians through several programs: the Youth World Show Judging Contest, the Youth College Scholarship Program (one-time $500 award), the YES Youth Educational Support Program and the JR/SR Youth Ambassador Program for members 18 and under. Program deadlines are June 1. Visit the Youth page for details and application forms.
What is the ABRA Recreational Riding Program?
The ABRA Recreational Riding Program recognizes and rewards members who ride for recreation outside the show ring. Members log ride hours throughout the year and earn certificates and awards at 200, 300, 400, and 500 hours. Any ABRA registered horse, pony, or mule — including Buckskin Bred registrations — may participate. Enrollment is $10 per horse-rider combination and is based on the honor system. Applications are accepted online or by mail.
